AGAST a success!

Thanks to all that came by this past weekend for the 12th Annual Gowanus Artists Studio Tour. Over 150 artists participated; I’d say we had several hundred visitors. I showed recent works and some older ones. Here’s a photo of a visitor, Paula, and me.
Dropped off paintings at the Salmagundi for Fall Auction

I had two paintings I was sure I wanted to submit for the Salmagundi Art Club’s semi-annual auction. I changed my mind at the last minute this morning and put in one of the Smith Street paintings instead of another one of Maine. This auction is one of the Club’s most popular events - original artwork at affordable prices. Bids for paintings start at $250!!! I think that’s too low, but good for collectors. You can preview the artwork starting Monday, Sept. 29. Galleries are open daily 1-5 pm, and Thursdays until 8 pm. The Auction takes place on three Friday nights, Oct. 10, 17, & 24th. I’ll probably be at all of them, although we’ll see about the 17th, since that’s the Friday before the AGAST studio tour weekend. Hope to see some familiar faces at the Salmagundi!
Smith Street addiction

For some reason, I became obssessed with Smith Street the past couple of months. The bright, saturated colors of the storefronts and awnings kept me mesmerized on various corners along a short stretch of Smith Street. I’m coccooning in my studio now, finishing these up with final touches and working on some other paintings… sometimes I need a little peace away from the street and passers-by. Been too busy painting to post here!

I’ve been on a Smith Street painting binge. The bright, colorful awnings and storefronts have been enticing. Unfortunately, I’ve not been keeping up on this side of things - need to take some photos of finished paintings to post them here. Meanwhile, I’ll be back on Smith Street for a little while longer; my latest small painting is of a view from between Degraw and Douglass Streets. Stay tuned!
Soon to be delivered to New Jersey

I finished this commissioned painting just before I left on vacation, but forgot to mention it here. I varnished it yesterday. The varnish brought back to life the spring greens and rich reds; and it will protect the painting from dirt, dust, toxicity in the air (although I doubt that will be much of an issue where this painting will be going!). I’ve added it to the Archive page of my website, at the very bottom with other commissioned works.
I’m back from vacation…

It’s been a heady 3 weeks of travel, and I’m having a hard time processing everything we saw and experienced in Tanzania and Uganda (+ 1 day in Kigali, Rwanda). Mostly we saw huge numbers of wildlife, gorgeous otherworldly landscapes, and countries lacking basic infrastructure. I really appreciate how easy our lives are in comparison.

Meanwhile, it turns out that more than a year after it’s publication, “100 New York Painters,” in which I was included, was finally reviewed in this summer’s Gallery and Studio Magazine (June/July/August issue). This magazine is “available free of charge in galleries, museums, book stores, hotels, restaurants, and other venues all around town” according to their website. The book, by Cynthia M. Dantzic, is available at all book retailers, including Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble. (yup, that’s me on the cover, barely two pictures away from Chuck Close!)

A com-mission completed!

Finally, a long-awaited painting completed… no, not of the farm, but of a lovely limestone house in Prospect Heights with the family’s 2 adorable kids out front. It took me quite a while to get the light right on the house, more lit on the right side by the morning light in spring, without it looking glare-y.I’ll add it to my “archive” on my website next week. Other paintings are getting finished up, also. Stay tuned!
